On Friday, May 11th, the USC Thornton community gathered on the Ramo Lawn for the school’s 135th Commencement Ceremony! It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of our extraordinary graduates as they head off into the world (or, in many cases, embark on advanced degrees at USC!).

Earlier that morning, in a speech at the main USC Commencement Ceremony, 2018 Valedictorian and Thornton graduate Rose Campion (’18) advocated for the power of empathy in an increasingly divisive world — a quality that she epitomized in her educational outreach work with Thornton’s Community Engagement Programs.

GRAMMY-winning composer Billy Childs (’79, Composition), recipient of the Thornton’s 2018 Outstanding Alumnus Award and the school’s featured commencement speaker, encouraged the graduating class to embrace their distinctive artistic voices. Child’s cutting-edge creative vision, which blends classical traditions with jazz musicianship, may provide an inspiring model for the class of multifaceted, interdisciplinary artists on the cusp of new careers.
