Composition students and alums win orchestral competitions

USC Thornton Composition students and alumni continue to garner accolades. Two major Midwestern orchestras will feature compositions by USC students and alumni.

“Even in Paradise,” by Patrick O’Malley (MM ’15, DMA candidate), and “Kaman Fantasy,” by Saad Haddad (BM, ’14), will be performed as part of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra’s Earshot program, under the baton of Rossen Milanov. “Suite Before Dawn” by Daniel Allas (BM, ’15), as well as those works by O’Malley and Haddad, will be performed on the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s 2015 Composer Institute concert, conducted by percussion and new music luminary Steven Schick.

Patrick O’Malley was also the winner of Symphony in C’s 20th Annual Young Composer Competition with his work “Symphonic Poem, Even in Paradise…” With this award, O’Malley receives a professional recording of the performance and consideration by the Theodore Presser Company for inclusion in its rental library.
