Solo Bach Competition

Students from Thornton’s Strings department perform complete sonatas, partitas and suites by Johann Sebastian Bach before a panel of distinguished guest adjudicators.

This annual event features finalists Javier Iglesias-Martin, Benjamin Lash, Dongfang Ouyang, and Ji Young Park and three celebrated guest adjudicators including Martin Beaver, Lynn Harrell, and Roland Kato.

PROGRAM
Violinist Dongfang Ouyang will perform Sonata No. 2 in A minor, cellist Javier Iglesias-Martin will perform the Cello Suite in D minor, violinist Ji Young Park will perform the Partita No. 3 in E major, and cellist Benjamin Lash will perform the Cello Suite No. 5 in C minor.

ABOUT THE ADJUDICATORS
Martin Beaver, a professor of violin at the Colburn Conservatory of Music, was the first violinist of the celebrated Tokyo String Quartet. Cellist Lynn Harrell, an internationally-renowned musician and educator, has won numerous awards, including the first Avery Fisher Award. Acclaimed violist Roland Kato was a member of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra from 1976 until his retirement in 2016.
