Thornton composition faculty member Camae Ayewa profiled in the New York Times
Composition faculty member Camae Ayewa was recently profiled by The New York Times. The article discusses the various artistic endeavors Ayewa has explored throughout her career, her most recent album and her journey into the world of hip-hop. Her latest album, Black Encyclopedia of Air, which was released September 17 on ANTI- Records, features collaborations with producer Olof Melander and rappers maassai, Nappy Nina, Lojii and Siifu. On November 12, International Anthem and Don Giovanni Records will release Ayewa’s collaboration with free jazz collective Irreversible Entanglements, Open the Gates.
Pianist Vijay Iyer spoke to the Times about why so many artists enjoy collaborating with Ayewa. “Everything about it, the sound artist side, the hip-hop side, the spontaneous poetry, the collaboration and community, the imagination that expands beyond,” he said. “All of that together continues to be super exciting to follow and to be a part of her world in a small way.”
