ALAJE (Afro-Latin American Jazz Ensemble)

alaje-ensemble

Directed by Aaron Serfaty, the USC Thornton Afro-Latin American Jazz Ensemble performs Afro-Cuban styles of music with a jazz sensibility. Founded by Thornton faculty Thom Mason, ALAJE focuses on the rhythmic traditions of Latin America, specifically Brazil and Cuba, with the idea of playing jazz standards approached in different rhythmic ways. A favorite at Los Angeles-area festivals and cultural events, the group has evolved into a “little big band” featuring student-arranged music and frequent guest artists and singers.
