Dear USC Thornton Students,
As I mentioned in last week’s memo, the County of Los Angeles recently issued new guidelines which have relaxed some of the requirements regarding student activities on campus. These guidelines include special accommodations for students who study in the arts, and they will benefit some Thornton students and allow for a partial reopening of Thornton facilities.
The following summary highlights immediate steps available to take advantage of opportunities to utilize Thornton facilities as they evolve.
Practice space request process
Our first goal is to open spaces for practicing for current Thornton majors who are living in the local Los Angeles area and are experiencing hardships.
In our initial phase of re-opening, we will prioritize Thornton majors needing a place to practice due to one or both of the following criteria:
- Significant sound restrictions at your current place of residence
- Lack of an instrument necessary for your major at current place of residence
Other requestors will be placed on a Waitlist and contacted as further opportunities become available. Access will be limited initially, but it is our intention to open more practice spaces as restrictions and logistics allow.

USC Thornton Majors: Practice Space Request Form
A first round of considerations will be made early next week by our Thornton Leadership Restart Team. Students who have submitted the request form can expect to hear from Music Operations with details on next steps.
The Thornton School is excited to begin the process of welcoming you back to our facilities and we are hopeful that more opportunities for practice space may be added before the end of the semester. Music Operations staff will be in touch to provide details as appropriate. If you have questions, please direct them to music.operations@usc.edu.
Stay safe and be well.
