From Jazz to Baroque to pop and experimental music, this week features a particularly diverse lineup of free events at USC Thornton – with a little something to grab everyone’s attention!
Monday, Oct. 12
Jazz Honors Combo featuring Greg Osby
Carson Center (CTV) – 7:30pm
The week starts off with a bang, as Jason Goldman leads the USC Thornton Jazz Honors Combo in an evening of standards and original compositions featuring acclaimed saxophonist Greg Osby, a noted bandleader and sideman for Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Jack DeJohnette, Andrew Hill, and countless other jazz greats.

Faculty Recital: Bernadene Blaha & Martin Chalifour with special guest Sergey Antonov
Alfred Newman Recital Hall (AHF) – 7:30pm
Thornton faculty members Bernadene Blaha, piano, and Martin Chalifour, violin, are joined by guest cellist Sergey Antonov in a chamber program featuring works by Tchaikovsky, Haydn and Arthur Honegger. Cellist Sergey Antonov is a Gold Medal Winner of the International Tchaikovsky Competition.

Music@RushHour: Variations 4 Piano
Simon Ramo Recital Hall (BMH) – 5:00pm
End each Wednesday on a high note, with Music@RushHour. This week’s concert showcases piano variations by Mendelssohn, Webern and Schumann, which explore both the familiar and the frontiers of the instrument. Following the event, free refreshments will be provided by downtown’s LA Café!

Maria Guinand Lecture: The Interpretation of Hispanoamerican Choral Music
The Music Complex G156 (TMC) – 9:00am
Internationally acclaimed choral conductor, pedagogue and advocate for music, Dr. Maria Guinand presents a masterclass as a true expert in Hispanoamerican choral music.
USC Thornton Symphony: New Music for Orchestra
Bovard Auditorium (ADM) – 7:30pm
Donald Crockett, chair of the Composition program, leads the USC Thornton Symphony in this annual concert featuring original work by student composers. Over the past 25 years, the NMO event has premiered more than 125 compositions, often leading to professional commissions and international recognition.
Popular Music: Second-Year Showcase
Ground Zero Performance Café (TRO) – 8:00pm
Second-year students from Thornton’s Popular Music program take to the stage of Ground Zero to show off their incredible rock, pop, R&B, folk, Latin and country music artistry.
Saturday, Oct. 17
Met Opera Live in HD: Verdi’s Otello
Eileen Norris Cinema Theatre (NCT) – 12:00pm
The USC School of Cinematic Arts hosts a free satellite broadcast of Verdi’s Otello as part of the Metropolitan Opera Live in HD series, featuring a pre-show discussion of the opera by Ken Cazan, chair of Vocal Arts and Opera at Thornton. The pre-opera talk begins at 12:00pm and the opera broadcast starts at 1:00pm. RSVP HERE for this event (required).
Sunday, Oct. 18
Paderewski Lecture-Recital: Musica Antiqua Polonica
Alfred Newman Recital Hall (AHF) – 7:00pm
Finally, the Polish Music Center celebrates its 30th anniversary with a survey of rarely-heard Polish works from the late Renaissance and Baroque. The USC Thornton Baroque Sinfonia will be joined by violinist Stefan Plewniak, an expert on this period, and together they will weave an exquisite tapestry of music and history.
Next week is yet another extra-ordinary week at USC Thornton, including masterclasses by Pepe Romero, a tribute to pianist and composer Alan Smith and a choral extravaganza featuring both the Chamber Singers and Concert Choir.
