Ocean Way Recording is a storied complex. Everyone from Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole to Natalie Merchant and Mariah Carey have recorded at the studios on 6050 Sunset Boulevard that were formerly known as Ocean Way and have since become United Recording Studios. On Saturday, April 8, students from USC Thornton joined the ranks of famed musicians who have cut tracks there.

“We had a fantastic day,” said Rick Schmunk, chair of Music Technology at Thornton. “This was a special event and collaboration between the school’s Popular Music and Music Technology programs.”

The day-long session featured musicians performing a song that was written by current Popular Music students and recorded by students in the Music Production degree program under the guidance of noted engineer Brian Malouf.

The song, written by junior Cooper Bell, featured the following students:
Vocals/piano: Cooper Bell
Backing Vocals: Lauren Jones, Georgia Greene, Cooper Bell
Synth: Sara Mulford
Guitars: Sam Yun, Hudson Barineau
Bass: Mackin Carroll
Drums: Carter Couron

Producers: Mackin Carroll and Andrew Stogel
Recording Assistants, editing and mixing: Jacob Chabon, Joey Messina-Doerning
Guest Engineer: Brian Malouf
