ABOUT THE COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

Lori A. Custodero (DMA ‘97) is a professor of music and music education at Teachers College, Columbia University, where she has developed a program focus on early childhood. She graduated from the USC Thornton School of Music with a doctoral degree in 1997, following a master’s degree in music theory from California State University, Northridge and an undergraduate degree in piano/theory from the University of Redlands.

Her research focuses on relationships between musical experience and human development, a symbiosis that has led to studies on children’s engagement with music through multiple lenses, including reciprocity, creativity and flow experience. She is widely published, and along with Harold Abeles, she co-edited Critical Issues in Music Education: Contemporary Theory and Practice (Oxford University Press), now in its second edition. A single-authored book, Before we Teach Music: The Resonant Legacy of Childhoods and Children, also published by Oxford, is due out this fall.

She has presented her work across the globe, and it has been translated into Portuguese, Greek, Italian, Korean and Chinese. She has held leadership positions in national and international organizations for music education. Co-creator of the WeBop! program at Jazz at Lincoln Center and The New York Philharmonic’s Very Young People’s Concerts, she is past director of the Teachers College Teaching Artist Certificate program that connects pedagogy to responsive art making.
