About

USC Thornton Concert Jazz Orchestra pays homage to the tradition of classic big bands with performances that regularly celebrate jazz greats. The group often performs music arranged by students, Thornton alumni and faculty and comprises musicians from the jazz, classical and pop programs.

Besides playing traditional big band music from the greats, the band also programs fan favorite concerts including music from iconic video games, motion pictures and television.

Ensemble Information

The ensemble is under the direction of trombonist and composer Jon Hatamiya.

Bandleader, composer, and educator Jon Hatamiya is widely regarded as an imaginative and receptive improviser and a proponent of the trombone as a modern creative voice.

The USC Thornton Concert Jazz Orchestra operates under the auspices of the Jazz Studies program, one of the first free-standing jazz studies departments in the nation.
