Cody Westheimer directs and scores climate change documentary, “Saving the Foothills”

USC Thornton Composition program alumnus Cody Westheimer (’01) has taken on the roles of director and composer for the climate change documentary, Saving the Foothills. The film captures the determined efforts of community members and organizations as they unite to protect 101 acres of the West Mesa in the San Marcos Foothills from development. Their extraordinary campaign succeeded in raising $18.6 million within just 90 days to purchase and preserve the land.

The documentary premiered on Oct. 4 at Santa Barbara’s Marjorie Luke Theatre, featured as part of their Green Film Series alongside other short environmental films. Afterward, Westheimer performed Shakuhachi music with friends before he was joined by relevant organizations for a Q&A discussion moderated by Geoff Green.
