USC Thornton presents Live! From Somewhere
By Evan Calbi & Alyssa Bierce
Live concerts have been canceled, but the show must go on.
Concerts have been canceled, the campus is closed, but the show must go on. We offer the first in a series of performances by USC Thornton students, live from… somewhere. Living rooms, offices, back patios, garages — where ever they may be.
“If you had told me a week ago I’d be writing to you with so many updates of our school’s cancellations, I would not have believed it.” So said Robert Cutietta, Dean of USC Thornton, in a letter to the Thornton community on Friday, March 13 announcing the cancellation of all USC Thornton events for the remainder of the semester.
Thornton was not alone. It was an unprecedented week when the COVID-19 virus and proactive measures to prevent the spread of illness brought live performance the world over to a standstill.
As concert halls go dark, we turn our focus to reaffirming our dedication to the remarkable artists who shape our school. We invite you to join us in celebrating our students as we highlight their performances from where ever they are.
Sophomore Nolan Juaire is a Classical Guitar major at USC Thornton. As part of his student employment, he works in RHM 112, the office of Ramo Hall, the music faculty building that is filled with teaching studios for the Classical Performance and Composition Division.
He often practices in the office at night, and it is there that he recorded “Felicidade” by Antônio Carlos Jobim, an arrangement by Roland Dyens.
Enjoy. Live from wherever we are.
USC Thornton students, alumni and faculty are invited to submit their homemade performance videos to the Live! From Somewhere series. Click here for more from the series, and to submit a video of your own.
