H. Robert Reynolds leads USC Thornton Wind Ensemble in “Smoke & Mirrors”

This week, the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music was named a premiere partner in New World Symphony’s exciting new digital initiative, MUSAIC.

MUSAIC is an interactive online community that represents a new approach to the time-honored tradition of passing musical knowledge to succeeding generations. The site will be continually updated with educational video content curated by New World Symphony and produced by partner institutions.

“Some of our MUSAIC videos will be interviews with individual faculty, while others will feature faculty working with students,” said USC Thornton Vice Dean of Division of Classical Performance Studies, Lucinda Carver. “I’m eager to work with my distinguished colleagues in the Classical Division, to highlight their skills and showcase the extraordinarily gifted faculty and students that make up the USC Thornton School of Music.”

To mark the launch of the program, USC Thornton contributed several videos, including performances by several USC Thornton student ensembles originally broadcast on KCET’s Open Call. To celebrate the USC Thornton Wind Ensemble’s upcoming concert on Sunday, September 28, today’s USC Thornton contribution to MUSAIC features the group’s performance of composer Erica Muhl’s “Smoke & Mirrors,” led by principal conductor H. Robert Reynolds. The footage comes from a 2012 USC Thornton event titled, “Women Composers of the Present.”

On September 28, H. Robert Reynolds and Sharon Lavery will lead the USC Thornton Wind Ensemble in American Emblems, a concert honoring the 200th anniversary of The Star Spangled Banner. The program features Variations on America and Country Band March by Ives, Copland’s EmblemsStreet Song by Judge Widney Professor of Music and Thornton alumnus Michael Tilson Thomas, and Composition faculty Frank Ticheli’s Saxophone Concerto featuring faculty saxophonist Christopher Bartz. The free concert will be held at Bovard Auditorium on USC’s University Park campus. Please visit our event calendar for more information.
