Laura Karpman calls for more female composers in music and film industry

Laura Karpman, a USC Thornton Screen Scoring faculty member, was featured in Billboard’s article “How Female Composers are Pushing the Boundaries to Change the Music and Film Industry.” The piece focused on a panel discussion on how to increase the number of female composers in the film industry, hosted by the Women in Film advocacy group. Karpman was one of seven of the all-women panelists. She said that when she joined the academy in 2015, she was “the first woman composer admitted since 1996.” Karpman, who was the first female governor of the Music Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, went on to discuss how through gaining leadership roles, she been able to change the culture by advocating for women in the industry.
