Austin Wintory celebrates ten years of video game Journey
Composer and USC Thornton Composition program alum Austin Wintory (’07) was interviewed by Screen Rant and NME about the ten-year anniversary of the popular video game Journey. Wintory composed the score for the game, which came out in 2012. The Journey score debuted higher on the Billboard charts than any original score in gaming history, and to this day, it remains the only video game score to be nominated in the Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media category at the GRAMMY Awards.
To celebrate this milestone, Wintory has re-imagined the game’s score with the London Symphony Orchestra and London Voices Choir in Traveler – A Journey Symphony.
“Ultimately, I wanted to come back to this soundtrack because I want to make something new enough that it sounds like you’re listening to it for the first time,” Wintory said. “And the motivation for that is because one of the recurring messages I have gotten over the past decade is from people saying Journey is their favorite game of all-time, and that they wish they could go back and experience it for the first time and experience it again as if they’ve never played it.”
