Ken Cazan interviewed in Crescent Valley Weekly on Hans Werner Henze’s “The English Cat”

Ken Cazan, chair of the Vocal Arts program and resident stage director of USC Thornton Opera, was interviewed in the Crescent Valley Weekly about the West Coast premiere of The English Cat, the 1983 opera written by famed 20th-century composer Hans Werner Henze featuring a libretto by controversial British playwright, Edward Bond. “Opera was not meant to be comfort food,” Cazan said. “It was intended to provoke thought, reflection. All of us in opera are story-tellers. We need to reach out to the audience’s hearts.”
