Malachai Bandy wins two major prizes

USC Thornton Musicology Ph.D. candidate Malachai Bandy recently won two prestigious awards: the Irene Alm Memorial Prize and the Ingolf Dahl Award in Musicology.  The Irene Alm Memorial Prize is awarded annually by the Society for Seventeenth-Century Music to the best student presentation or lecture at the society’s spring conference. Established in 1971, the Ingolf Dahl Award in Musicology is given to the best student paper read at the annual joint meeting of the Northern California and Pacific Southwest chapters of The American Musicological Society.

Bandy’s winning papers were entitled “Squaring the Circle: Structure, Proportion, and Divine Geometry in Buxtehude’s Herr, wenn ich nur Dich hab’ (BuxWV 38)” and “‘Make of the Man and Woman a Circle’: Geometry, Alchemy, and Compositional Unio Mystica in Buxtehude’s Settings of Psalms 42 and 73.”
