Gustavo Dudamel to conduct Nina Shekhar’s New York premiere of “The Mother is Standing”

Gustavo Dudamel, music and artistic director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, will conduct USC Thornton Composition alumna Nina Shekhar’s The Mother is Standing at the New York Philharmonic’s Spring Gala on April 24. Dedicated to Shekhar’s mother, the piece examines the love between a mother and child across cultures and religions.

This year’s Spring Gala is a celebration of music education that will feature student musicians from across New York City, as well as performances by Common, Hera Hyesang Park and Bernie Williams.

Shekhar (MM, ’20) is a composition faculty member at Mannes School of Music at The New School, Composer-in-Residence of The Crossing and Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra’s 2023-2024 Sound Investment Composer. She is also a PhD candidate at Princeton University.
