Patrick O’Malley releases debut orchestral album “The Horizons” with BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra

Composer and USC Thornton alumnus Patrick O’Malley (MM ’15, DMA ’19) has released his debut orchestral album The Horizons with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Andrew Constantine. Featuring violist Brett Deubner, O’Malley’s viola concerto is accompanied by his pieces “Soliloquy,” “Obliviana” and “Rest and Restless.”

“The viola concerto concerns itself with rejuvenation and maturation; frozen wanderings evolving into bright futures embodied in the image of a grand horizon,” said O’Malley. “While composing the piece in 2022, at the same time coming out of the Covid lockdowns, I felt a strong feeling of capturing this sense of rebirth with the concerto, using Brett Deubner’s immense lyricism on the viola to explore a world of both fragility and strength.”

O’Malley also serves as arranger and a conductor for the video game concert series Journey LIVE with Grammy-nominated composer and USC Thornton alumnus Austin Wintory (’07).

Released by Orchid Classics on June 7, The Horizons is now available on all streaming platforms and CD.
