Maestro Carl St.Clair led the USC Thornton Symphony in a rehearsal this week for their Friday, September 11 performance with pianist and Keyboard Studies professor Daniel Pollack. The all-Russian program will include the overture to Mikhail Glinka’s opera Ruslan and Ludmilla, followed by Tchaikovsky’s beloved Piano Concerto No. 1, featuring Pollack, and will conclude with Mussorgsky’s vivid Pictures at an Exhibition suite.
The Friday evening, 7:30 p.m. performance at USC’s Bovard Auditorium will be free and open to the public, with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis. Daniel Pollack will be available for a “meet and greet” immediately following the performance, at the auditorium’s entrance.
St.Clair, Pollack and the ensemble will bring the program to Santa Barbara’s Granada Theatre September 12 and 13 in performances featuring animated projections by USC School of Cinematic Arts faculty Michael Patterson and Candace Reckinger, in collaboration with animation artists from USC. Muséik, a new technology developed by Ion Concert Media, will allow a human operator to “play” the animated video in sync with the live performance and Ion company founder Scott Winters will be seated within the orchestra, taking cues from the conductor.
