Zanaida Robles co-hosts Symphony of Brotherhood Concert
Robles is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts in choral music at USC Thornton. She is also the artistic director of the San Gabriel Valley Choral Company and director of Discovery Camerata, an organization for emerging vocalists and composers.

USC Thornton doctoral candidate Zanaida Robles co-hosted the Symphony of Brotherhood Concert along with Classical KUSC announcer Dennis Bartel. Held at Zipper Hall at The Colburn School in Los Angeles, on August 18, a national and local multiethnic lineup of classical and opera artists performed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech at the 1963 March on Washington.
Receiving its name from a line in King’s historic speech, where he says: “With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a symphony of brotherhood,” the concert highlighted King’s little-known appreciation of classical music and opera, as well as the historic footprint of the civil rights leader in Los Angeles.
The Symphony of Brotherhood Concert included a world premiere of a poem honoring the civil rights leader, in addition to performances by Grammy Award winning bass/baritone Mark Doss and Thornton alumni Cedric Berry (’94, MM ’96), Juliana Gondek (’75, MM ’77), Anita Johnson (’87) and Polli Chambers-Salazar (’86, MM ’90, DMA ’94).
Annelle Gregory, who won the gold medal at the 2012 NAACP’s Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics, will be attending USC Thornton in the fall to study violin with Glenn Dicterow, former concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic.
