“Shining Night” documentary garners Audience Choice Award

Thornton faculty and students join Britten 100 LA

The Los Angeles Times ran an article about the many classical music events happening around Los Angeles this Fall that feature music with strong political underpinnings. The article mentioned that Thornton faculty and students will perform with Los Angeles Opera music director James Conlon at the Britten 100 festival throughout L.A. later this year.

Doctoral student Oliver Salonga’s debut performance with the Manila Symphony Orchestra was featured on INQUIRER.net. Salonga’s performance included his interpretation of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Minor, Op. 21.


Thornton Piano Performance student wins Grand Prize at international competition in Germany

Sophomore classical pianist Evan Pensis recently won the Grand Prize at the 9th International Siegfried Weishaupt Piano Competition in Baden-Wurttemburg, Germany. He was also distinguished with the Audience Award for his recital.


USC Welcomes First Group of International Artist Fellows

Jacinto Astiazarán, Vladimir Gorbach, Fei Kayser and Frederico Fernandez are part of the inaugural group of USC’s International Artist Fellowship Program, which provide the opportunity for emerging artists to pursue graduate study in any one of USC’s six preeminent arts schools, along with the Fisher Museum where historic, modern and contemporary work are exhibited.

USC Thornton keyboard faculty, Daniel Pollack, will be holding masterclasses at the Dresden, Germany University from August 27 – 29. Mr. Pollack first garnered the music world’s attention when he became a prize-winner in the International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow.

Classical performance freshmen Leah Hansen and Yue Qian performed their rendition of Handel’s “Passacaglia in G minor” at USC’s annual New Student Convocation, where the incoming class was encouraged to become literate in imagination, the world, the arts, great literary works, digital media and ethics.
