Nicholas Méndez Del Valle wins Collegiate Concerto Competition
USC Thornton undergraduate pianist Nicholas Méndez Del Valle recently was the unanimous grand prize winner of the Santa Monica Symphony and Westside Music Foundation’s new Collegiate Concerto Competition. The Santa Monica Mirror profiled Del Valle for this accomplishment and mentioned his May 26 performance with the Santa Monica Symphony.
Echo Wang showcased in Emerging Artist Concert for Verde Valley Sinfonietta
The Verde Valley Sinfonietta showcased pianist and USC Thornton Keyboard Studies student Echo Wang in its annual Emerging Artists Concert earlier this month in Sedona, Ariz. Wang performed Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor with the orchestra, under the direction of Kevin Kozacek.
Victor Labenske commissioned by MTNA
USC Thornton alumnus Victor Labenske was commissioned by the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) to write a chamber work for intermediate level players. The work, “A Walk Through the Valley,” published by Alfred Music, will be premiered at the MTNA National Conference in Spokane, Wash. on March 17, 2019.

Kevin Fitz-Gerald, a USC Thornton Keyboard Studies faculty member, and strings faculty member Andrew Shulman performed as part of the Broad’s monthly “Beethoven, Bagels & Banter” performance series this past Sunday. The trio – comprised of Fitz-Gerald on piano, Shulman on cello and Robert Davidovici on violin – presented works by Haydn and Brahms.

Vicki Ray earns rave reviews for her solo performance
Pianist and USC Thornton alumna Vicki Ray (DMA ’88) received a rave review from SF Classical Voice for her January 16 performance at CalArts REDCAT in downtown Los Angeles. Ray performed a solo concert featuring two works with the accompaniment of visual projections by artist Carole Kim. The review described Ray as “stealing the show.”
