Julia Adolphe premieres violin concerto with LA Phil

Composition DMA student Julia Adolphe (MM ‘12) premiered a violin concerto, “Woven Loom, Silver Spindle,” with the LA Philarmonic in December. She collaborated closely with Martin Chalifour, the LA Phil’s principal concertmaster and a faculty member of the USC Thornton Strings program, on this piece during the 2020 lockdown. This is the second commission that Adolphe has done for the orchestra.

Adolphe told Spectrum News 1, “[This piece] strives to evoke the intricate and methodical nature of creative work. Ultimately, I want listeners to just let their imaginations run wild and the peace can be about whatever they want.”

Currently, Julia Adolphe is busy working on her next few commissions, including one for the Boston Symphony Orchestra entitled “Makeshift Castle.”
