early music students perform onstage

USC Thornton Baroque Sinfonia performance celebrates history and emotion, says Daily Trojan

On Oct. 6, Alexandria Narinyan of the Daily Trojan delivered an evocative review of the Baroque Sinfonia program. Narinyan’s poetic account described the musical event as “representing the whirlwind of emotions and feelings of being in love,” capturing the passionate spirit of the night.

Especially valuable to students were the introductions and descriptions of each piece by faculty members and performers. Dornsife master’s student Alia Munn praised Vice Dean Rotem Gilbert for her description of each piece’s story before they played.

Thornton DMA candidate Olmedo Espinoza emphasized the importance of exploring the historical context of Baroque music for authentic interpretation, further specifying that the performance required delving into era-relevant techniques like improvisation and ornamentation.

All in all, the night of Oct. 3 was a celebration of historical Italian emotion and grandeur within the USC community. For a full account of the ensemble’s dynamic performance, read the original coverage here.
