Composers, Librettists and Performers collaborate for New Opera Works performance
This Friday at noon Newman Recital Hall, New Opera Works (NOW), a new student organization at USC Thornton, will present the first performance of three opera shorts. Running 10 minutes, each short is composed by Thornton Composition majors and performed by Thornton Vocal Arts students and alumni.
NOW, founded by current DMA Vocal Arts student Emily Thebaut and Composition faculty member Mark Weiser, creates an opportunity for collaboration – through the creation of a new opera – between the USC School of Dramatic Arts, USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, and Thornton. Each opera varies in form, from the experimental to the traditional, and gives the individual artist a voice in the development of the collective work.
NOW will perform alongside another student-run organization, the Chamber Opera of USC, who will present a “Sondheim Review” prior to NOW’s performance.
