Musical Theatre students and Sound Off! Music for Bail present events this weekend

This weekend, Musical Theatre students present a student-produced film that explores the legacy of enslavement, while graduate certificate student and Los Angeles Orchestra Fellow Jay Julio Laureta’s ensemble, Sound Off! Music for Bail, presents a virtual concert and fundraiser for a national bail fund.

On Friday, Feb. 26 at 5:00 pm (PST), students in USC’s Musical Theatre program present “The Principles of Progeny,” a film that explores the two-dimensional legacy of the enslavement and colonization of Black and non-black peoples. The student-produced production showcases the contemporary and historic lenses of Black excellence through song, storytelling, and dance. RSVP for the Zoom event here.

On Saturday, Feb. 27 at 7:00 pm (EST), Los Angeles Orchestra Fellow Jay Julio Laureta’s ensemble, Sound Off! Music for Bail, presents a livestreamed concert, “Composition for Abolition: Sound Off Changes the Times One Note at a Time.” Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Bail Project’s National Revolving Bail Fund and Sound Off’s continued work to educate audiences and mobilize artists against the prison-industrial complex. The concert is presented on the online concert platform Groupmuse with event partner Planetary Music Movement, a platform led by De’Siree Reeves and Dara Hankins to present concerts and forums celebrating music beyond the historical dominance of European ethnocentrism within the classical music tradition.
