Community Music

Master of Music Degree

Somewhere between the classroom and the concert hall lies an exciting space called “community music.” Combining skillsets in music education, community engagement and advocacy, this emerging field and this degree focus on building creative partnerships to bring instruction and performance into non-traditional settings—such as prisons, hospitals, senior living communities, and centers for developmentally disabled, marginalized and disadvantaged people of all ages. It’s a growing career option for musicians looking to move beyond the classroom or concert stage to explore fulfilling, service-oriented work.

The four-semester degree includes study in educational theory, progressive methods in pedagogy, applied music instruction, and entrepreneurship as well as a practicum which engages students with one of our many community partners in Los Angeles.
